<image:title>Home - Call to action The Bells Corners Community Garden, aka BCCG, is led by neighbours with a passion for growing good food and giving back to the community! During the warm season, the team will grow vegetables to donate to the local food bank and community groups. With a huge commitment to getting to know their neighbours and building community, the BCCG will also lead activities for Bells Corners residents.</image:title>

<image:title>Home - Front-yard garden pilot In 2020, BCCG neighbours Ken and Marc, supported by Joan, Connie, and Zion, combined their joint front-yard into a vegetable garden. In that first year, they met tons of other neighbours as they worked outside to establish the garden and grow good food. Growing community from the start, they shared the harvest with neighbours by setting up a table where they could each grab a free box of tomato. Last year, BCCG approached the FAMSAC Food Cupboard to donate the food from the front-yard garden. In total, they donated 150lbs of fresh vegetables to the food bank.</image:title>

<image:title>Community garden - BC Community Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>A communal space where Bells Corners residents can grow fresh vegetables, that is the long-term plan. A City of Ottawa’s survey show that residents in Lynwood Village and Westcliffe Estates are keen gardeners—72.5 percent and 66.4 per cent, respectively. So let’s bring those neighbours together to grow good food and grow the community! The BCCG will be collaborating with Just Food to establish the garden. They are a “local, non-profit, community-based organization that works on both rural and urban food and farming issues in Ottawa and the surrounding region.” Just Food manages the Community Garden Network (CGN) which provides capacity-building resources and funding for community gardens across Ottawa. We will be submitting an application to the CGN for funding to set up the garden. At this point, you can assist us by sharing your thoughts on a community garden in Bells Corners. Stay tuned for our survey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community garden - Finding a garden location</image:title>
<image:caption>Location! Location! Location! That’s the mantra as we look to find the most suitable location in the neighbourhood to set up a community garden. Sun is important, so is access to water. It would also be ideal for the garden to be in a location that is accessible by public transport. That way, our neighbours who are not driving are also able to participate in the garden. Along with in-ground and raised beds, we plan to have a toolshed, compost bins and rain barrels. So as you go about Bells Corners, have you seen a lovely location in the neighbourhood that could sustain a community garden? Drop us a line and let us know.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community garden - Partners welcome!</image:title>
<image:caption>We are looking for partners and sponsors to help us build the garden. Perhaps you have a skill that you can bring to the process. For example, you might be an expert in landscaping that can help us with the site planning. Or, perhaps you are business that can do in-kind or monetary donations. With the call to action of “Growing community!” we are keen to collaborate with like-minded folks who are also committed to enhancing the lives of residents. If you have an idea of how you can support the establishment of a Bells Corners community garden. let’s talk!</image:caption>

<image:title>Maple Hill Allotment garden - A sweet collaboration!</image:title>
<image:caption>The Maple Hill Urban Farm is located in Ottawa’s Greenbelt, and it’s managed by farmer Don Trott, who fundamentally believes the world need more farmers. The farm is an ideal environment of sustainable food production. Farmer Trott is committed to teaching and sharing the benefits of growing food naturally, and collaborating with others in the community who have a similar approach to gardening and giving back. With the kind support of Farmer Trott, team BCCG joined the allotment garden community at the Maple Hill Urban Farm in 2024. He cleared a generous plot of land that we used to grow fresh produce. The vegetables were donated to the FAMSAC Food Cupboard, strengthening our BCCG goal to support food insecure families.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The plot of land at the Maple Hill Allotment Garden is a much bigger undertaking than the other two BCCG locations—our front-yard garden and the OLP Catholic School Garden. <image:title>OLP Catholic School garden - Planting the seeds</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2024, we collaborated with principal Catherine Gasper of Our Lady of Peace Catholic School (OLP), and the School Council to establish a front-yard garden at the school. Gardening provides experiential learning in subjects like science, math, and environmental studies. So the goal was to incorporate the garden in the students’ curriculum, allowing them to gain hands-on experience. As part of the first steps of teaching about sustainable food production, students from each class planted seeds of their preferred vegetables. To encourage teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving, each class member voted for their favourite vegetable from a list such as tomatoes, zucchini, onions, beans, and of course, sunflowers! The planted seeds were taken to the classrooms where students took care of them until the seedlings started growing. Then, our BCCG team nurtured the seedlings until the garden was set up.</image:caption>

Principal Catherine Gasper welcomed families, oversaw the project and, provided a pizza lunch. Creating a thriving garden starts from the ground up—literally! To set up our 10 green, raised garden beds, we followed a layered approach that enriches the soil, improves drainage, and promotes long-term plant health. We began by laying down cardboard, which acts as a natural weed barrier while slowly breaking down to enrich the soil. Next, we added logs and leaves which helps retain moisture and provides essential nutrients as they decompose. Finally, we topped it off with rich, nutrient-dense soil, creating the perfect environment for our vegetables to thrive. This method not only ensures healthy, fertile garden beds but also makes use of natural and recycled materials, keeping our gardening practices sustainable and eco-friendly. With our raised beds prepped and ready, the next step was transplanting the seedlings and nurturing the plants.</image:caption>

<image:title>OLP Catholic School garden - Growing and giving away the greens!</image:title>
<image:caption>It was a summer of growth tending the OLP Garden for the greater cause. While the staff and students of OLP went on summer break, our dedicated BCCG volunteers stepped in to keep the school garden thriving. Our team worked tirelessly to water, weed, and harvest the fresh produce, ensuring bountiful and healthy crops. Thanks to these efforts, the OLP front-yard garden yielded an incredible 300+ pounds of fresh vegetables, all of which were donated to the FAMSAC Food Bank. This contribution provided nutritious, homegrown food to families facing food insecurity, reinforcing the power of community, teamwork, and sustainable growing. The garden offers the OLP community a chance to strengthens their relationships with other stakeholders such as local farmers. It is also a chance to foster community spirit through volunteerism and mentorship. With every harvest, we are reminded that a little care and collaboration can go a long way in making a difference. Here’s to another season of growth and giving!</image:caption>

<image:title>Food bank donations - Food insecurity</image:title>
<image:caption>The Ottawa Food Bank says food insecurity “ranges in severity from being worried about running out of food, to not being able to afford a balanced diet, to going hungry.” The food bank says this crisis disproportionately impacts lone parents, single individuals, persons with disabilities, and Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities. And as food prices continue to rise, more families are turning to food banks for support. The growing need is not sustainable. We believe that access to healthy food is a right, not a privilege and together, through community gardening, partnerships, and volunteer support, we can make a difference. So throughout the growing season, food from our front-yard garden, Our Lady of Peace Catholic School garden and our Maple Hill Allotment garden is harvested and delivered to the food bank’s dedicated volunteers weekly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Food bank donations - FAMSAC Food Cupboard</image:title>
<image:caption>The FAMSAC Food Cupboard serves Bells Corners and the surrounding communities at Bayshore, Crystal Beach, Craig Henry, Manordale, and Trend Village. Our BCCG team is inspired to support FAMSAC by growing and donating fresh vegetables to families in need in our community. This is a wonderful example of working together to fulfill FAMSAC’s motto, “Neighbours helping neighbours!” Since 2022, Team BCCG has proudly donated 1,5850 pounds of fresh vegetables to FAMSAC, ensuring that families in need have access to healthy, homegrown produce. In 2022, we donated 150 pounds. In 2023, we gave 250 pounds. In 2024 and 2025, with three different garden locations for growing food, we donated 870 and 315 pounds of vegetables respectively. Are you growing vegetables you’re willing to donate to FAMSAC, especially if you live in Bells Corners? Reach out, we’d love to share how we did it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Food bank donations - Locally grown, community shared</image:title>
<image:caption>Each year, our goal is to grow more food and give back in bigger ways. This year, along with donations to FAMSAC Food Cupboard, we expanded our reach by sharing our fresh produce with seven additional food banks: Barrhaven Food Cupboard Britannia Woods Caldwell Family Centre Kanata Food Cupboard Morrison Gardens Pinecrest Terrace Community House We even made a special delivery of radishes to the Stittsville Food Bank! In addition, some gardeners, like Ali (left), generously shared their own harvests with our BCCG team to support food bank donations. In total this growing season, the eight food banks received 2,200 pounds of fresh vegetables! This includes basil, Bok choy, beans, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, lettuce, peppers, radishes, Swiss chard, tomatoes, and zucchini. Learn more about our BCCG garden initiatives, and if you have a thriving green thumb and the bandwidth to help, please join us to grow and donate fresh vegetables to community members in need.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Growing good food!</image:title>
<image:caption>At Bells Corners Community Garden (BCCG), we believe that access to fresh, nutritious food is a right, not a privilege. That’s why we are dedicated to growing healthy, homegrown vegetables to support our local food bank and ensure that families facing food insecurity have access to fresh, wholesome produce. Our efforts span across three key locations, each playing a vital role in producing food for donation, as well as our aspiration for a future community garden: 1. OLP Catholic School Garden: Engaging young minds in the joy of gardening, this school-based initiative teaches students about sustainability while contributing fresh vegetables to the food bank. 2. Maple Hill Allotment Garden: A bigger space where our passionate volunteers work together to grow abundant produce, maximizing our impact on food security. 3. Front-Yard Garden: A shining example of community generosity, this space transforms a shared, private front yard into a thriving vegetable garden dedicated to feeding those in need. 4. A future community garden: Our goal is to establish a community garden to give families who do not have the space at home an opportunity to cultivate their own food. Whether you volunteer, donate, or support in other ways, your involvement makes a difference. Come help us at the garden!</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Growing community!</image:title>
<image:caption>Food has the power to bring people together, not just at the table, but in the garden, the kitchen, and the community. By connecting like-minded neighbors, local organizations, and businesses, we are building a stronger, more food-secure Bells Corners, one seed, one meal, and one partnership at a time. To tackle food insecurity in our community, we are leading three key initiatives: 1. Food Bank donations: We grow fresh vegetables and donate them directly to the food bank, ensuring that families in need have access to healthy produce. 2. Farm-to-table Initiative: Through this initiative, we will provide the garden space and supplies for women to grow vegetables and prepare nutritious meals for their families. 3. Seed and Soil Program: Via this partnership with Just Food residents who face barriers can receive free vegetable seeds and soil to start or expand their garden. Together, we can champion food security in Bells Corners, not just by growing food, but by growing a stronger, more connected community. Join us in making fresh food accessible to all!</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Partnerships</image:title>
<image:caption>With every seed we plant and every harvest we share, we are not just growing vegetables. We are growing hope, resilience, and community support. That’s why we’re looking to engage partners, community groups, businesses, and organizations, who share our commitment to ensuring vulnerable neighbours in Bells Corners has access to fresh food. Here’s how partners can help: 1. Fund or sponsor our activities: In-kind donations, materials, and funds are essential in keeping gardening costs down, allowing us to support families who struggle to afford fresh food. 2. Volunteer at our BCCG garden locations: Through volunteer support, your involvement helps expand our capacity to grow more food for those who need it most. 3. Support our food bank donations: Help us grow and donate fresh produce to ensure families in need have access to healthy, locally grown food. 4. Contribute to our Farm-to-table Initiative: Partner with us to transform fresh garden harvests into nutritious, complimentary meals for families facing food insecurity. We believe that food security is a challenge best tackled together. That way, we can create sustainable, community-driven solutions to address food insecurity. Help us make a difference by volunteering, donating, or spreading the word.</image:caption>

<image:title>Front-yard garden - Front-yard garden</image:title>
<image:caption>Yes, our end goal is to have a designated space for a communal garden in Bells Corners. But, while we work on making that a reality, we’re growing a variety of vegetables in our 100 square foot front-yard garden. We have grown onions, lettuce, peas, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, chives, zucchini and even squash—before the vine borers got it! The food is being donated to the FAMSAC Food Cupboard. Each growing season, we plan to grow more and donate more vegetables from the front-yard garden. Meanwhile, we are looking to expand the number of neighbours who would like to donate vegetables to the food bank. So if you’ve got the yard space and the time to contribute to a worthy cause, then consider joining this front-yard garden community!</image:caption>

<image:title>Front-yard garden - Plant-a-row, share-a-row</image:title>
<image:caption>Calling all Bells Corners gardeners with space to plant-a-row, share-a-row! This budding Just Food idea encourages community members to plant a row in their gardens to share with the local food bank. Or, if gardeners have excess vegetables, and would like to donate it to the food bank, our BCCG team would be happy to coordinate the pick up and delivery. One zucchini here, one egg plant there—before you know it, we will have a big basket of fresh vegetables, compliments of Bells Corners neighbours to donate to vulnerable families in our community! So, drop us a line, and happy gardening and happy harvesting, folks!</image:caption>

<image:title>Front-yard garden - Donate your yard</image:title>
<image:caption>The BCCG front-yard garden is a testament to what neighbours can do when we work together. If you have yard space with amazing sunshine, and you’d like to grow fresh food for yourself and the food bank, this initiative is designed for you. The goal is to meet residents where they are. So do you want to grow fresh food for yourself and donate some to the food bank? We can help you set up! Or, do you prefer to donate your yard, and coordinate community volunteers to tend the garden? No matter how you choose to participate, your generosity will help provide fresh vegetables for families in need. So get in touch, and let’s grow together to cultivate community, one yard at a time!</image:caption>

<image:title>Partner with us - Food insecurity is tough on families</image:title>
<image:caption>For many families, especially those living in lower-income households, the cost of basic groceries like vegetables, fruits, dairy, and meat has become a significant financial burden. The high cost of food is forcing families to make difficult decisions, often opting for cheaper, less nutritious options. This can lead to poor health outcomes, particularly for children, who may experience developmental and academic challenges due to inadequate nutrition. By providing fresh, locally grown produce to families who use the food bank, the BCCG is helping to bridge the gap. Why the BCCG needs your support Increased demand: More families need fresh food as prices rise. Growing costs: Inflation is making gardening supplies more expensive. Community impact: With your support, we can grow more food and expand our reach. Sustainability: We rely on donations and volunteers to keep the garden thriving.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/609f8087527965013455aad3/b8678bca-39dc-4278-92f4-1fcfe6751f80/BCCG+Website+content_woman%2C+laptop.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Partner with us - Your support via funding can help</image:title>
<image:caption>At the BCCG, we rely on the generous support of our partners to bring fresh food to our community. Our sponsorship and funding opportunities allow local businesses, corporations, and individuals to help us grow, harvest, and distribute food to those who need it most. Whether it's funding for garden supplies, meals for our farm-to-table initiative, or operational costs, by becoming a sponsor, you are directly contributing to our mission of addressing food insecurity. <image:title>Partner with us - Grants and policy advocacy too</image:title>
<image:caption>We actively seek grants from government agencies, foundations, and corporations that share our commitment to fighting food insecurity and promoting sustainable farming practices. These grants allow us to expand our reach and continue providing free vegetables and meals to those in need. Policy advocacy is equally important in creating a lasting impact. Our goal is to work closely with local governments, public organizations, and community stakeholders to push for policies that support urban agriculture, improve food distribution systems, and address the root causes of food insecurity. Why support us through grants and advocacy? Sustainable funding: Grants ensure long-term support for our goal to champion food security. Positive change: Policy changes can create a more supportive environment for food security and urban farming. Increased reach: With grant support, we can expand our community outreach and services. Strengthened communities: Advocacy efforts contribute to stronger, more resilient food systems in Bells Corners.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This year again, BCCG will partner with Just Food to host a distribution site in Bells Corners. The Seed and Soil giveaway will be held at the Maple Hill Urban Farm, 200 Moodie Dr, Ottawa ON K2H 8K6. To take part in this program, simply register online, then get ready to pick up your free garden supplies! Be sure to bring three blue or black recycling bins, or similar sturdy containers, to collect your soil. Please do not use garbage bags because the soil will be too heavy to carry. We're especially dedicated to supporting families experiencing food insecurity and are eager to help them supplement their grocery bills by growing their own fresh, healthy food at home. <image:title>Community Christmas Dinner - A season of giving</image:title>
<image:caption>During Christmas 2024, our BCCG team organized a “Christmas Dinner Delight” an event in support of our new neighbours living in Bells Corners. The goal of the event was to ensure that fewer families go hungry, while creating a spirit of giving during the holidays. The dinner was made possible thanks to the generous support of the City of Ottawa Civic Event Funding, the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre, FAMSAC Food Cupboard, Councillor Laine Johnson, the City of Ottawa’s Integrated Neighbourhood Services Team, and contributions from community members. For the Community Christmas Dinner this year, we welcome the same partners and we are joined by new friends from the South Nepean Community Health Centre, and the Nepean Rideau & Osgoode Community Resource Centre. We can’t wait to make merry and bright with our Bell Corners’ neighbours again for Christmas 2025!</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Christmas Dinner - A picture-perfect photo!</image:title>
<image:caption>Local business Zoom Photobooth offers high-quality prints, digital sharing, custom branding, and interactive experiences, all treats that are perfect for a Christmas party. Thanks to their generous sponsorship last year, families were able to capture festive Christmas memories! With fun props, top-notch lighting, and plenty of holiday cheer, it was time for families to strike a happy holiday pose! Plus, each family received a printed copy of their photo to take home.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Christmas Dinner - Rooted in kindness</image:title>
<image:caption>After getting their Christmas photos taken, families had dinner which included halal chicken, rice, sweet potato, steamed vegetables, fruit salad and cake. Plus, there were free books, winter toques, and gift bags for the children. The 2024 Christmas Dinner Delight event was a pilot for bringing joy to families during the holidays. Check out photos below from the event, and stay tuned for more on our 2025 Community Christmas Dinner.</image:caption>

<image:title>Farm-to-table Initiative - Farm-to-table Initiative</image:title>
<image:caption>Right now, every seed planted at our three BCCG garden locations has a purpose…feeding those who need it most. Our 2024 Christmas Dinner Delight event was a pilot for what is possible for also sharing complimentary meals with families in Bells Corners. That seed idea has inspired our new BCCG Farm-to-table Initiative. So this season, in addition to our regular donations to the food bank, we were excited to launch the BCCG Farm-to-table Initiative, in collaboration with the United Way East Ontario and the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre and farmer Don Trott. This program is designed specifically for women. A designated section of the BCCG Allotment Garden at the Maple Hill Urban Farm became a shared space where women and their families grew food, learned new skills, and built a strong network of mutual support. Once the harvest came in, the women transformed the vegetables into hot, nourishing meals. That way, fresh, healthy food was shared with families in the program.</image:caption>

<image:title>Farm-to-table Initiative - Growing wellness</image:title>
<image:caption>Gardening supports mental health and well-being by reducing stress, increasing mindfulness, and offering a calming space to reconnect with nature. For many of the women in the program, tending a garden bed became a quiet moment in a busy week, a chance unwind and focus on something nurturing. Working side-by-side with other women also created a sense of belonging. As the women planted, watered, and harvested together, they formed supportive friendships, celebrated small victories, and shared the satisfaction of watching something grow. This simple act became a source of confidence, camaraderie and emotional resilience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Farm-to-table Initiative - Plates full of freshness</image:title>
<image:caption>Every vegetable picked from our gardens is packed with flavor and nutrients. From crisp greens and vibrant tomatoes to hearty root vegetables, our garden provide the foundation for meals that bring sustenance to those who need it most. So whether it’s a warming vegetable soup, a fresh stir-fry, or a hearty chicken stew, our BCCG Farm-to-table Initiative ensured that every bite was filled with delicious goodness. Check out the list of the meals we prepared: Chicken stew with peppers and onions served with a vegetable medley of green beans, carrots and zucchini on a bed of rice. Curried chicken and potatoes with beef rice pilau and vegetable pakora made with cabbage, carrots, zucchini, onions and peppers. Thanksgiving turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, salad, steamed vegetables and chicken and squash soup.</image:caption>
